Dan Frachette

Biography

"I've never met a Dan Frechette song I haven't liked." - Patti Lamoureux.

Have you ever been struck by a song and needed to hear it over again and louder to catch every nuance?  Songs that signal an arrival of new plateau in understanding or a new direction or philosophy?  Dan Frechette has been crafting hundreds of such songs for many years in the prairie city of Winnipeg and Pinawa, Manitoba respectively.  With over 1300 songs to his credit  Dan is a master of songcraft not found often in the young crop of musicians and artists.

His music conjures the many eras and histories of popular song before his birth 34 years ago.  His abilities as a perfomer and a self-taught multi-instrumentalist adds a multi-faceted essence to his songwriting.  His voice harkens to the sound of edgy Americana and the storied history of the past starting from 40 years ago.  A pen to paper has produced new songs for the generations such as "Money in the Wind", "Who Will Take My Place?", "You Don't See It", "My Canada", "Sweet Ukulele Haley",  "Dance and Play", "My Bride and I", "Welcome to the Corporation", "Baby Lemonade", "King Of Spades", "Mists Of Down Below" and "The Drunkard", "Ramblers, Gamblers, and Bums".  Songs of this caliber are not  so common in the modern day, with gadgetry and fashion distracting from the core quality of the popular song.

Armed with a harmonica and any number of instruments, Dan Frechette performs with passion and conviction.  His songs and performances are subdued but contain a power that eventually presents itself later when people who have seen him find themselves unable to forget songs he sang that are now part of the fabric of their life.  Songs that speak to the deeper philosophical trials of humanity and the politics of time, greed, and pathos.  Songs that grow on you and as Woody Guthrie said "songs to grow on".

With five albums to his credit Dan Frechette suffers the curse of the troubadour, forever performing for small or large audiences wherever he can, slowly building a reputation as a fine tune-smith and performer.  Everyone who listens becomes a fan.  Frechette himself says, "I'm only ever as good as my audience, people pay to pay attention."  His performances have been erratic in the past, mostly due to inattentive audiences, and Dan just gives up and seldom enjoys performing to those audiences.  It is indeed a hard journey to find like minds but Dan is patient and has been rewarded time and time again with standing ovations and audiences who wouldn't let him stop.

Frechette has genuinely spanned a number of genres in his tribute to his muse.  A folk album with echoes of early Bob Dylan protest song, a bluegrass album with storytelling and performances on a number of bluegrass instruments, a blues album that made use of Dan's edgy singing and blues prowess.  His songs have been covered successfully by other artists including Ireland's Dervish and also The Duhks.  Dan continues to tour in his Toyota Corolla and with a tongue in cheek calls his record company "Corolla Trunk Records".  He shuns the typical music industry trappings and protocol, preferring to keep his career and outlook simple.  He has had a manager in the past (Mitch Podolak, founder of Winnipeg Folk Festival among others, and Home Routes) and a major publishing deal (EMI in Toronto) but with these experiences prefers to work under the radar and make timeless music.

Lost in Holland

Biography

"An awesome fusion of sound...Josh's brilliant folk twinged guitar runs being complemented by Michael's wonderful, soaring cello."
- Scott Sandie, Broken Arrow Magazine 2008

“He has created an album of love, loss and regret for some of the things he’s had to do”
-Jason Rovou, CNN

"I loved josh from the moment I heard his music. He has a depth, and you cannot deny that."
- Neil Young, Sundance 08'

As the sun broke into the sky and began to burn, Josh Hisle was returning from yet another sleepless night of fighting a faceless enemy. With his mind racing towards a breaking point, he needed an outlet to release all the anger and pain. He dropped his gear, put down his rifle, and picked up an acoustic guitar. As a result, his songwriting background and combat experience bring forth passion and truth, both virtues rarely seen in today's music. But as all things are completed, altered and improved, so was Lost In Holland. Josh had returned from the Sundance Film Festival hungry for the road after promoting Neil Young’s movie CSNY: Déjà Vu and in walks Michael G. Ronstadt...and the rest was history. Michael's extreme cello style and extensive knowledge of songwriting and performance bring a blazing fire of skill, emotion and delivery that will leave you amazed, among other things. Michael has shared the stage with artists like David Bromberg, Linda Ronstadt, and Murial Anderson in addition to an extensive solo career.  In 2008 Lost In Holland performed at Neil Young’s Annual Bridge School Benefit Concert.  In June 2010, they were featured artists on The Morning Blend television show in Tucson, AZ, and in 2009 performed live on 91.1FM WTJU’s “Folk & Beyond”.  Lost In Holland has toured throughout the United States and Canada, making waves wherever they go. This duo, this musical revolution, is nothing short of brilliance.
Michael G. Rondstadt

Biography

Michael G. Ronstadt has been offering his music to audiences on cello, guitar and voice for sixteen years and is conversant with a wide range of styles.  He has performed throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico with artists like David Bromberg, Linda Ronstadt, and Muriel Anderson.  In addition to collaboration, Michael currently tours with his groups Lost In Holland, Ronstadt Generations, and the Lisa Biales Trio.  His playing can be found on over 30 albums from the last 10 years, including Ronstadt Generation’s Lulo (2010), Lost In Holland’s The Last Great Loss (2009), Amber Norgaard’s last three albums from 2006-2010, and Santa Cruz River Band’s Volume I (2004) and II (2005).  Michael Ronstadt’s solo albums, Bridging The Gap (2010), Cotton Dreams (2008) and Motionless Swirls (2006), “…show him to be a performer with an amazing command of the typical and exotic sounds of the cello, a true virtuoso and a man of instinctive musicality”(Dan Buckley, Tucson Citizen, 2008).  Michael received his Master of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) in June 2008, and his Bachelor of Music in Cello Performance from the University of Arizona in May 2006.  He has studied under esteemed pedagogues Yehuda Hanani, Nancy Green and Dr. Gordon Epperson.
MAZ

Biography

Inspired by the likes of John Zorn and Béla Fleck, Marc Maziade (guitar, banjo, podorythmia) invites you on a voyage through Québec's musical memory, down to the depths of modal jazz and into trance-inducing modern melodies.

On this first album, he collaborates with some of the Montréal's best up-and-coming musicians: Robin Boulianne (violin, mandolin, podorythmia), Olivier Hébert (double bass), Gabriel Godbout-Castonguay and Jean-François Debellefeuille (Rhodes, Wurlitzer and Moog). Each of them lends his personal flavour to the arrangements, making MAZ a unique, contemporary universe deeply-rooted in tradition.

In February 2007, Marc Maziade gets carte blanche from Festival Ste-Rose en Blanc to put together his own musical project. First, he calls upon Robin Boulianne (violinist and composer) with whom he already shares a passion for traditional and jazz sounds. To complete the group, he invites the most inspiring musicians from his cohort at Université de Montréal: Louis-Joseph Cliche and Olivier Hébert. Later, Maziade records a first version of Quasi-s-pace with Lévis Bourbonnais, Olivier Hébert and Jean-François Debellefeuille, the soundtrack to a modern dance show with the same title. Over the next few years, MAZ's musicians reunite for a few performances. In 2011, the band finally jumps headfirst into adventure and produces its first album, Télescope.

With Téléscope, MAZ breathes new life into traditional Québec music by drawing inspiration from today's musical trends. The band creates pieces that achieve a daring and efficient balance betweenfervour and trance, between acoustic and electric sounds, between self-affirmation and openness.

This instrumental collaboration is a vibrant representation of modern-day Québec and its rich cultural identity. The musicians are eager to become its messengers on the North American and European circuits.
